[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]When traveling by air don’t be shy or bashful to let the airport personal you have Parkinson’s for a variety of reasons from pre-boarding if needed to getting assistance from a flight staff. When making your hotel reservations request a room on the ground floor or near an elevator. Inquire if the hotel has handicapped rooms and are there grab bars in the bathroom and shower/bathtub. Ask if the shower has a curtain or glass door.
If you have a connecting flight or going from check in to your departure gate have a wheel chair available, moving through an airport is filled with hazards which increase the probability for falling plus the stress of trying to negotiate movement in an airport. During the flight try to stand up at least once to stretch and move around as it helps with stiffness. If you had communicated to the flight staff you have Parkinson’s they will be very understanding and helpful. When booking the flight try to get an aisle seat and a non-stop flight if possible. Use the bathroom before boarding as airplane bathroom are small with limited space to move. Check as many bags as possible only keeping your medications, water and snacks on your person.
Keep your medicines in a carry-on bag, belly pouch or purse so it is easily accessible. Have water and some food with you as well. Have a list of your medications as well as contact information of doctor’s and who to notify in case of an emergency.
Don’t try to schedule too much in one day, have a day of rest prior to the trip as fatigue can set in quickly. Wear loose clothes with lots of pockets to put medications and important documents. When going through security have the medications in a separate bag so it is easy for airport security to examine. If you have a DBS certificate from the manufacturer try to get approved for pre-screening.
Try to stick as close to your routine at home when traveling, taking your medications, resting and exercising. On the plane or in the airport this can be difficult but schedule the time as it will make the trip more enjoyable, not to mention the relieving of stress.
Airports and air travel are stressful for everyone, even the most seasoned traveler. If possible look for an alternate way to travel as in train or boat.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
