Stairs and steps are dangerous for those who have Parkinson’s as even small steps can be treacherous. These are a few modifications to consider like the installation of handrails to both sides of the stair way, if not rails on both side if not at minimum a hand rail on one side. Make sure the handrails are installed with enough distance from the wall allowing for adequate space to have a good hand grip and please make sure the hand rails are secure by installing in the wall studs.
At the bottom of stars have a sturdy and stable piece of furniture to store items and not carried up the stairs as well have installed non-skid surfaces to the steps. Also consider painting the front of the steps white. The top and bottom step should be a very bright colors, reds and yellows, indicating the beginning and end of the stairs. Make the stair way as visible as possible.
Have light switches at both the bottom and top of the stairs or steps.
This is critical to keep steps and stairs ways brightly lighted for safety. Keep all steps and landings free of clutter. Do not store items on stairs. If a walker or wheel chair is necessary have a ramp constructed over the exterior steps making leaving and entering your home safer and easier.
